Embassy of Innovators · Carbon accounting 2020–2024
From household footprints to supply-chain decarbonisation
Between 2020 and 2024 the Embassy of Innovators developed two carbon-accounting projects, vis.eco and the Universal Carbon Ledger. Their concept and methodology became the basis of Enoqi, spun off as a separate company in April 2024.
Timeline
- vis.eco 09/2020 – 08/2023 EoI project households Household footprints from direct and indirect emissions, privacy by design.
- Universal Carbon Ledger 09/2023 – 04/2024 EoI project products and transactions Emissions recorded with each transaction and passed from supplier to buyer.
- Enoqi since 04/2024 Spin-off company companies and supply chains Real emission data flowing through the supply chain, with SMART targets.
Milestones
- 4 Oct 2020 Program strategy outline v1.1
- 09/2023 vis.eco transformed into the Universal Carbon Ledger
- 04/2024 Enoqi spun off as a separate company
Stage 1 vis.eco
09/2020 – 08/2023 · Embassy of Innovators project
vis.eco was a concept and platform that gave households individual, quantitative feedback on the environmental footprint of their lifestyle. It calculated the household footprint from direct emissions (fuels for cars, heating and cooking) and indirect emissions (electricity, food, goods and services). Where user data was missing, community averages completed the picture. Users could compare their result with other users, national figures and sustainability targets.
Key features
- Privacy by design: a MyData approach. The data belongs to the household, which decides what it shares.
- Proof of concept: run with households in a municipality near Bratislava.
- Methodology: built on the GHG Protocol.
- Dates
- September 2020 to August 2023
- Run by
- Embassy of Innovators
- Role
- Michal Ohrablo, author of the concept and project manager
- Focus
- Households
vis.eco showed that a footprint is only as good as the data behind it, and that the best data sits with the companies that make the products. In 2023 the work was transformed into the Universal Carbon Ledger.
Stage 2 Universal Carbon Ledger
09/2023 – 04/2024 · Embassy of Innovators project
The Universal Carbon Ledger is a concept and methodology for consistent and deterministic attribution of greenhouse gas emissions to concrete products and services. Instead of estimating the value-chain footprint from generic factors, emissions are recorded alongside business transactions and passed from supplier to buyer with each transaction. Every emission is fully allocated to an output, which closes the double-counting and the Scope 1 to Scope 3 loopholes of current practice.
The outline covered
- the transaction data exchange process
- imputation of missing input data and an index of completeness
- KPI definitions and methodological blueprints for industries
- verification and audit mechanisms, reflecting the expected CSRD requirements
- Dates
- September 2023 to April 2024
- Run by
- Embassy of Innovators
- Role
- Michal Ohrablo, author of the concept and project manager
- Focus
- Products and transactions
How it works
The outcome · a separate company, not an Embassy of Innovators project
Stage 3 Enoqi
since 04/2024 · Spin-off company
Enoqi (ENOQI j.s.a., Bratislava) was spun off in April 2024 and builds on the concept and methodology of the Universal Carbon Ledger. It is a decarbonisation intelligence network: every company measures its own direct emissions, and real data flows through the supply chain instead of industry averages and unanswered questionnaires. Companies share benchmarks, not data, so every company contributes and none is exposed.
- Since
- April 2024
- Company
- ENOQI j.s.a., Bratislava
- Role
- Michal Ohrablo, co-founder and CEO
- Focus
- Companies and supply chains
Enoqi works in three steps
-
Trace it
Real data from the supply chain, measured rather than estimated, with a verifiable chain of custody.
-
Plan it
SMART targets grounded in real industry benchmarks.
-
Decarbonize it
Real reduction, tracked and verified across every link in the network.
The SMART methodology
Targets are assessed on five axes. The result is a SMART score from F to A+, which applies one methodology to a small supplier and a large corporation alike.
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Relevant
- Time-bound
What carried over
| Idea | vis.eco | Universal Carbon Ledger | Enoqi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real data over averages | Household data, community averages only where data is missing | Emissions recorded with each transaction; imputation and an index of completeness | Measured emissions, no industry averages; AI reads utility bills |
| Data flows from suppliers | Planned integration with sellers of fuel and energy | Emissions passed from supplier to buyer | Real data flows through the supply chain |
| Privacy and trust | Privacy by design, MyData | Verification and audit mechanisms | Shared benchmarks, not shared data |
| Goals, not just numbers | Household goals and comparison with targets | KPI definitions | SMART targets and a SMART score from F to A+ |
